During his first term of presidency, a fundraising
letter was sent to a minister in New York State. The campaign
letter was addressed to Mr. God. Upon learning about this mishap
in the paper, Mr. Reagan wrote the minister an apology.
Reverend
Doyle Daugherty
Commack, New York
March 11, 1982
Dear Reverend Daugherty:
I’ve just received a news clipping
regarding the campaign solicitation you received addressed to Mr.
God. I thought perhaps I should offer an explanation to you. I’ve
already spoken to God about it.
I hope both He and you will understand
that while the letter bore my signature such letters are the product
of a computer. The Senate campaign committee has permission to use
my name in its fundraising so I hadn’t seen or known of this
letter until the clipping arrived.
Reverend Daugherty I’ve asked
God for a great many things – particularly since getting this
job – but never for a campaign contribution. Maybe I’ll
ask for help in correcting a greedy computer. At least the computer
has raised its sight considerably; the only other experience of
this kind was hearing from a lady whose prize show horse had received
such a letter.
I’ve already asked God’s
pardon, I hope I have yours.
